Why we started with cleaning
Everyone's computer fills up. It's a universal, genuinely annoying problem — and solving it well turns out to require the exact hard thing we wanted to build anyway: an engine that can look at thousands of your files, understand what they actually are, and act on them safely without ever being wrong in a way that costs you something.
To find a duplicate photo, the software has to see the photo. To know a document is a near-copy of another, it has to read the text. Most tools solve that by uploading your files to a server. We refused to. So we built the understanding to run entirely on your device — and cleaning is the first, most useful thing it does.
The thesis: local AI changes what's possible — and privacy is non-negotiable
For the first time, capable AI models run well on ordinary laptops. That quietly breaks the old bargain, where "smart" meant "send it to someone else's computer." Your files, your photos, your work — the most personal data you own — never needed to leave your machine to be understood. They only left because it was easier for the vendor.
We think that's backwards, and increasingly indefensible. The intelligence should come to your data, not your data to the intelligence. That's the bet Vaulith is built on.
